He and Susanna co-host Monday to Wednesday (she shares duties with Ben Shephard on Thursdays and takes Fridays off) and their on-screen chemistry has helped to turn around some disappointing ratings – over the past year there has been a five per cent increase in viewing figures and the programme gets peak audiences of more than a million.
(Piers recently tried to stir up a bit of tension by asking: ‘What would your kids say is your most shameful secret – other than “Mummy fancies Piers?
”’)I suspect he could learn just as much from Susanna, who was once voted the TV host the nation would most like to wake up to (one excitable reporter described her as ‘the sexiest thing to come out of Croydon since Kate Moss’).
If First Dates has turned blind dating into a spectator sport, ITV’s new show is taking things to the next level.
What if your first date wasn’t with the person you were hoping to perhaps begin a relationship with – but with their parents instead?
That’s the concept of Meet the Parents, which will let the ‘picker’ ask a set of parents any question they like about their son or daughter – from relationship histories to bad habits and cringeworthy stories.
Of course, the subject of those embarrassing stories will be listening in the entire time, powerless to stop the flow of information aside from the use of a one-off life-line phone call.
After meeting a series of parents, the picker will choose which prospective dater they’d like to meet up with.
The series is set to be hosted by Holly Willoughby, who’ll be overseeing all of the parental overshares.
“We all know how embarrassing parents can be and nobody knows you better than they do,” she says.
“I can’t wait to hear what humiliating secrets they’ll be revealing and see who will regret leaving their love life in the hands of their parents.” While there isn’t an air date for the series yet, applications are open for those who want to appear on the show – if they can stand the potential embarrassment.
